Earlier this month West Haven Baptist Church in Tonganoxie, KS reached out to Prairie Fire Signs and Graphics regarding their existing monument sign. West Haven expressed interest in creating and installing new acrylic sign faces, changing out their existing fluorescent lights to state of the art LED’s, and using brushed aluminum letters stud-mounted to the existing monument brick to highlight the church’s address. These enhancements would significantly improve the look and feel of this very large monument sign.

The first step in every good sign project is the Consultation Process. The design and leadership team of West Haven consulted with our design team on current challenges of the existing sign faces. Items of concern were that the actual wheat logo and “West Haven” font were too small. The sign’s surface area was not being maximized with the most important information-the Brand Image. Also expressed was the desire to not have so much information on the sign. In most cases simpler is better, and West Haven’s team agreed.

After listening and information gathering, next comes the Design Process. For an incredible design, a thorough site survey of the original monument sign was needed. A site survey is crucial to the development of a quality sign. A site survey will verify all measurements, a chance to take a lot of pictures, revisit with your customer, and thwart off installation woes.  With all that information in hand, it was time to get to work. Throughout the design process, we had constant communication with West Haven to capture their vision. Several proofs later West Haven and Prairie Fire Signs both agreed on the final design.

Next comes the Fabrication Process. West Haven’s cabinet size of the monument sign was 120” x 72”. We obtained 2 very large acrylic panels of this size and printed the new design using UV ink using a flatbed printer. After that, we cut and mounted 2″ long studs onto 1/4″ thick aluminum letters and numbers to be used for the address of the church.

Lastly, Prairie Fire had the honor of installing all our fabricated parts into this monument sign. First step was to remove the old acrylic panels and slide the new panels into place. Next, we had the task of swapping out twelve 60” fluorescent lamps with new LED’s which would make the sign a lot more brighter and cost efficient. After that, we drilled into the existing brick and installed routed aluminum letters with ½” spacers to give “passers-by” the address of West Haven. In the end, this newly revamped monument sign looked great and gave the customer exactly what he or she wanted.
